Design For Painters |
| Jim teaches a one-day workshop titled Design for Painters. In this workshop, Jim discusses the elements and principles of design, and how they can be applied to make all types of paintings more successful. |
Summary |
| This workshop is predominantly lecture, using a PowerPoint presentation format, supplemented with discussion, and significant class interaction. After a conversation about what is necessary to become a competent painter, and what goals artists may have, Jim discusses how design contributes to meeting these goals. He then covers in detail the seven major design elements that artists have at their disposal, and the seven major design principles which they can apply to their paintings, along with some additional design guidelines. Jim illustrates the application of these principles with examples from his own paintings. Students participate in several short workshop exercises to ensure they fully understand how to apply what they're learning. |
|
| Jim discusses how to employ these principles in the planning stage, during the actual painting process, and in a self-critique after every painting is complete. He wraps up the workshop with brief critiques of the design (only the design) of paintings brought to the workshop by the students. Students leave the workshop with a comprehensive understanding of how to apply design principles to their paintings. |
